I surely hope to transform what I do as a passion into my vocation, but until I'm regarded as an expert, I'm going to tread carefully and continue to learn.

On the privacy thing, I don't think you need to worry too much about the kids. You can get a microphone that will focus on your audio (like a lapel mic) and not worry too much about the nonsense around you.

Growing an audience is the hardest thing to do because it takes patience. I have been blogging and playing around in social media for the last three years, and I've never really committed to a regular routine. As a result, I don't have a well defined tribe, but I do have people starting to take notice, because each time I come back, I come back better than I was before.

Let me know if you need any help getting started with your podcast or vlog. I know a lot of really talented people in those spaces and would be happy to put you in touch. Thanks for stopping by my corner of the web, I hope you enjoyed it!

Re: Who Gave You Permission to Do That?

"Keep the 80/20 creative passion rule, spend 80% of your energy doing what pays the bills and 20% doing what you love."

Unless what pays the bills is also what you love, in which case you can do 100% of paying bills while loving it. :+D

Excellent post. I had been wanting to make either a podcast or Youtube channel but I always have the same problem of no privacy. When ever I try to make a video I am either outside and the outside noise is too much (not to mention I am not use to making videos while in public) such as cars and the wind or am inside and my kids are always making lots of noise. My kids don't go outside much and my youngest is 3 so keeping them quiet and busy, away from my room is impossible, specially when that is their room as well.

But when I do get a chance to finally get it started I hope to be able to make it my career/bill paying activity some day. But for now I will settle for just getting some attention in order to grow my audience. I have tired the blog thing but it has been very hard to catch attention, specially when I am not that great at exposing my blog so people can read it and also can't get those who do see it to stick to reading my long posts, have a hard time expressing my feelings in words. That's why I wanna try a podcast of vlog.

Re: Why Moto 360 Will Kill Google Glass

I have never considered getting a smart watch, until that is, I saw the moto 360. Yes!!! I've always been weird, but fortunately have had something else (Strength Finders 2.0 calls it "Woo") that has helped me get others excited about my weird ideas and passions...but not everybody...and I have been met with resistance. The payoff, though, regarding those in the later category, is just what you said: my life gets richer and more amazing, and they remain stagnant and boring. Cheers to the weirdos, for we shall unveil the fascinating world that we ALL have the opportunity to explore and celebrate!

Re: What are you known for?

Great stuff Peter! It really does take intentionality to create a voice that people recognize and become invested in. So much of social media is just regurgitation and shallow fluff. Those who want to cut through the crowd must think deeply about the story that is uniquely theirs.

Dustin W. There's a great audience for that, but don't expect to rub elbows with the other magicians.

On that note...

Re: How a Simple, Responsive Web Design Can Get You Noticed

I know what you mean @Peter G McDermott -- I'm a big fan of Mashable but have had some serious "I want to punch that writer in the face" moments after reading some of the Google+ posts. I've even made an attempt to reach out to write about Google+ and never heard anything. Either they don't recognize how well some of my articles do on Google+ or my request got caught in the spam filter.

I would think that a post with 5K shares - Anatomy of a Perfect Google+ Post - would get the attention of a news site like Mashable. And the fact that some of my infographics haven't shown up keeps me humble. But hey-- I can always use more humility in my life. :D

Dustin W. Anyway, i read the post and thought it was great, showed it to my team, who agreed, and we asked Peter if we could syndicate it.
